We assess adults who are at risk of an adult onset genetic condition or those seeking treatment for a prediagnosed genetic disorder. We re-evaluate adults who may have a childhood onset genetic condtion who will benefit from current advancement in genetic technology, and may finally have an answer to their health questions. Adults with intellectual disability, epilepsy, congenital sensorineural hearing loss, cystic fibrosis, thalassemia, are examples of adults with a childhood onset condition who would like further review and management as an adult with us.

At least 12% of adult hospital admissions are for genetic causes (Emory, Rimoin, 1990). Approximately 10% of the chronic diseases (heart, diabetes, arthritis) which occur in the adult populations have a significant genetic component (Weatherall, 1985) and up to 10% of all cancers have an inherited susceptibility. At this time, we do not provide a Cancer Genetic service.

Depending on the individual case, a person may be given predictive, presymptomatic or diagnostic tests to identify genetic risk factors, along with consultation about options for management or treatment.

Potential reasons for adult genetic counselling & evaluation include an adult with a:

  • genetic condition who would like periodic monitoring by a specialist,
  • family history of a genetic condition,
  • strong family history of common adult onset disorders such as heart disease, dementia, or diabetes.
